On 14 and 15 October 2024, the European battery industry experienced two key days in building a sustainable and innovative future. In Lyon, at the Campus du Numérique of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the first joint General Assembly of IPCEI and the European Battery Innovation (EuBatIn) project took place.

This event, co-organised by the French Directorate General for Enterprise (DGE) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, provided a valuable opportunity to bring together representatives from the European Commission, Member States, and business leaders from the battery industry. Among the participants, as project members, Flash Battery had the opportunity to discuss and plan the future direction of the European battery industry, which faces significant challenges and opportunities.

Merging the IPCEI Batteries projects for a more cohesive and innovative European ecosystem

The Assembly marked a decisive step towards merging the two IPCEI projects under joint Franco-German leadership. IPCEI, the pan-European project to support research and innovation in the battery sector, and the European Battery Innovation (EuBatIn) project have the common goal of creating a European industrial battery supply chain capable of developing increasingly safe, durable and cost-effective storage technologies to support electric mobility and sustainability, while reducing Europe’s dependence on raw material supplies from the East.

This integration aims to create a more cohesive ecosystem, with the goal of strengthening the European battery supply chain by fostering collaboration and innovation. In January, the appointment of a new Facilitation Group, with members from both IPCEI projects, will further define the next steps towards this union.

Challenges and opportunities of the European battery industry

The key topics discussed during the Assembly were mainly innovation, sustainability and growth for an increasingly green mobility in Europe. Delegates discussed in depth the developments of individual projects, with specific focus on central aspects such as the supply of raw materials, the development of advanced cells and modules, the construction of efficient battery systems and recycling.

The meeting provided an opportunity for representatives to update and network, exploring the potential for strategic collaborations to address common challenges facing the European battery industry.

“Investing in advanced battery manufacturing and recycling technologies and contributing to increasingly sustainable mobility is a mission that Flash Battery pursues with determination. Participating in IPCEI projects, together with companies and EU Member States, allows us to play our part in shaping a future in which Europe can rely on state-of-the-art solutions and a strong, autonomous industrial supply chain.”
